Kilpisjärvi, Finland

Kilpisjarvi is just south of the Norway / Finland border crossing, well north of the Arctic Circle. It's a small village with a fuel station, accomodation and eating options, and a surprisingly large supermarket. From the ski perspective I would regard it as a stop off for a night or two, principally to ski to the 'three country cairn' where Norway, Finland and Swedens borders meet. Practically, the best way to reach the cairn is from Kilpisjarvi, which is 15 to 20 kilometres away.  Thanks to John Farmer for providing this information on Kilpisjärvi.

Getting to Kilpisjärvi – by Air

Take a flight to either Kittila or Rovaniemi airports.

Bus services to Kilpisjärvi

Apart from renting a car, the only way I know is to get the once a day Arctic Route Bus that runs from Tromso to Kittila to  Rovaniemi and back. This runs until the end of March and then just from Rovaniemi from April onwards. There is a change of bus operator at Kilpisjarvi. Cross Country Ski Map of Kilpisjärvi

Cross Country Ski Tracks and Routes

The ski track network extends to 55 km when fully open. Check the ski track map for current status Infogis.fi/kilpisjarvi).

There are two routes to the cairn, the first crosses the lake with the other going up towards the border crossing and then over undulating terrain. Both should be tracked.

Other tracks tend to lead around the bottom of the lake and the back of the town but will often be chewed up by snow scooters. There is limitless off-track ski touring.

Snow Conditions and the Weather should be the determinants as to where and when you ski. If conditions are good and forecast to stay that way doing a round trip to the cairn in a day is achievable. Be warned however that blizzards, white outs and incredibly strong winds should rule out any skiing. Always take advice from locals and take sensible precautions.

Where to Stay

There are 4 upmarket hotels in Kilpisjarvi but it is also possible to stay in simpler and cheaper options such as:

  • Tundrea - cabins around a central lounge restaurant.

  • Guesthouse Haltinmaa - I have not stayed in the accomodation there but they offer a great value buffet 'eat as much as you like' early evening meal

  • Between the border and the town itself is the 'Retkkeilykeskus' which would be my recommendation, especially for single travellers. The bus stops there. It has en suite rooms, a very good breakfast is included and a cafe/restaurant for evening meals. Skis can be rented and there is a Wax room. It is however some way from the town, but an ideal start point for skiing to the cairn.

  • I tend to use booking.com to make my accomodation arrangements and these plus other options can be booked from them.
