Golsfjellet, Norway

Pronounced Bools-fi-el-er.  This resort offers 150 km of groomed trails, which are often well-maintained into the spring, and has access to more extensive touring options on Nystølfjellet. Golsfjellet lies between Gol and Hemsedal in Viken County in the Hallingdal region.  Hallingdal is a premier destination for cross-country skiing, boasting over 2,000 kilometers of free, well-maintained trails. The region is especially known for the long-distance Hallingdal Track, and it offers diverse terrain for all skill levels in the areas of Gol, Geilo, Ål, and Golsfjellet. The season typically runs from November through April, with the best snow often found in January and February.

Getting to Golsfjellet by Train

Oslo Central station to Gol Station 3.5 hours, onward taxi  for a half an hours drive.

Bergen station to Gol Station 3:44 hrs every 4 hours, onward taxi for a 31 minute drive c£27.

Getting to Golsfjellet by Bus

Oslo bus station to Gol bus station - 3 hours 5 times a day. Onward for half an hours drive.

Bergen bus station to Robru (Gol) 7 hours, 3 times a day. Onward taxi for 25 min drive c £27.

Cross Country Ski Tracks and Routes

There are well groomed cross country ski trails suitable for the whole family at Golsfjellet.  The trails are located in gently rolling forest and high mountain terrain, between Solseter (800 metres) and Nystølvarden (1296 metres) above sea level to give some pleasant skiing and sufficient challenges.


Barbecue huts are located throughout the trail network around Golsfjellet, and Jondalsstugu is occasionally open for dining.

The ski trails on Golsfjellet are very well marked, so it is easy to find your way (and back) – even if you are not familiar with the area.

Located on Golsfjellet, Solseter is 7 km from Gol.  It has lit trails of 0.5, 2, 3 and 5 kilometers in a varied forest terrain. The lights are on until 10:30 PM every evening.


The cross-country ski arena has a circular track that is sufficiently hilly and can be used with both classic skis and skate skiing. There is a biathlon stadium with 10 targets connected to the ski cross facility which can also be used in the summer. There are barbecue huts at Solseter but you need to bring your own firewood/coal.


There are also 7.5 and 20 kilometer loops, with the latter connecting to the Golsfjellet trail network.


The iconic long-distance ski route of the Hallingdal Trail winds through the Hallingdal mountains and passes through many of the region's popular ski areas.

  • North -> Stølsviddene and Tisleidalen
  • East -> Nystølfjellet and Søråsen
  • West -> Gravset and Lykkja in Hemsedal
Cross Country Ski Passes

The ski trails on Golsfjellet run through 16 farms and affect nearly 160 landowners.  It's the responsibility of the Golsfjellet Utmarkslag to coordinate and organise the groundwork and trail preparation at Golsfjellet.  Funding is provided by them, the municipality, tourism, land and cabin owners and other voluntary contributions. Any  deficit is covered by the Golsfjellet Outdoor Activities Association.
